Why you should buy your ticket on Family Days.
Highlights
Discover the magnificence of the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College , known as the “Britain’s Sistine Chapel.” With its extraordinary 3,700 square meters of richly decorated walls and ceilings, it represents one of the greatest masterpieces of English Baroque art.
Designed by Sir Christopher Wren as a dining room for naval veterans at the Royal Hospital for Seamen in Greenwich , it was painted by the celebrated artist Sir James Thornhill over a 19-year period. Its refined and imposing baroque decorations are among the most important works of art in the United Kingdom.
With the help of the audio guide, you can delve deeper into the history and symbolism of this unique place, admiring over 200 mythological, historical, and contemporary figures that decorate the ceiling. These works recount the profound political changes, scientific and cultural achievements, naval exploits, and commercial triumphs of the 18th century, also celebrating the coronations of William III, Mary II, and George I.
After admiring the grandeur of the Painted Hall, you can visit the evocative Nelson Room , where Lord Nelson's body was laid to rest. Through an immersive audiovisual experience, you'll discover his life, his connection to Greenwich, and the crucial role he played in the Battle of Trafalgar. The room, with its elegant architecture and marble floors, is a masterpiece in itself.
Don't miss the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul , considered one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in England. Rebuilt after a fire, it features naval-themed decorations, a majestic altar, and a geometric ceiling in shades of blue and ivory.
During the day you can take part in the Painted Hall Talks , short meetings of about 30 minutes led by expert guides who reveal the secrets and stories of the characters depicted in the frescoes .
For an even more comprehensive experience, join the “500 Years of History” tour, a 45-minute journey through five centuries of history and architecture at the Old Royal Naval College. You'll discover that the complex stands on the site of an ancient Tudor palace, the birthplace of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and which later became a royal hospital for seamen. The tour takes in iconic landmarks such as the Grand Square, the Water Gates, King Charles Court, the Colonnades, and the Nelson Footbridge.
All tours and talks are included in the Painted Hall admission ticket, offering an immersive experience of art, history, and architectural wonder.
