Description

Further information on the places visited:

Island of Capri
Located in the Gulf of Naples, a few nautical miles from Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, Capri is an island of approximately 10 square kilometers divided into two municipalities: Capri and Anacapri. The center of Capri revolves around the famous Piazzetta, about 150 meters above sea level, while Anacapri is higher, at 275 meters. The two seaside towns are Marina Grande, home to the main port, and Marina Piccola, on the opposite side, near the famous Faraglioni.

To reach the center of Capri from Marina Grande, the most convenient way is the funicular, whose ticket office is located to the right of the hydrofoil dock. To get to Anacapri, you can take a direct bus from the port.

Mount Solaro
At 589 meters above sea level, Mount Solaro is the highest and most panoramic point on the island. From its terraces, you can admire the Faraglioni, the town of Capri, the Sorrento Peninsula, the Li Galli islands, and, on clear days, even the Gulf of Salerno.

You can reach the summit in two ways:

  • By chairlift , from Piazza della Vittoria (Anacapri), in about 12 minutes.
  • On foot , via an uphill path starting from Piazza della Pace, behind the Anacapri cemetery (about 1 hour's walk).

On the way down, you can detour to the 16th-century Cetrella Hermitage. From there, you can continue along the ancient mule track to the center of Anacapri (about 20 minutes).

Villa Malaparte
Villa Malaparte is a private residence built by the writer Curzio Malaparte and overlooks the Bay of Matermania. Its Pompeian red walls and linear architecture make it an architectural icon perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape.

The villa offers spectacular views of the Sorrento Peninsula, the Faraglioni, and the Scoglio del Monacone. The rooftop, accessible via an external staircase, serves as a solarium and reflects the owner's contemplative spirit. Also noteworthy is the glass-bottomed fireplace, which offers glimpses of the sea below.

The villa cannot be visited, but can be admired from the Pizzolungo walk , immediately after the Matermania Cave, on the promontory of Capo Masullo.

Villa Jovis and Villa Lysis
Emperor Tiberius moved to Capri, escaping the frenetic pace of life in Rome, and built twelve villas there. Among these, the most important is Villa Jovis, built in the 1st century AD on a promontory overlooking the sea, on the eastern tip of the island. The 7,000 m² villa offers views stretching from the Gulf of Naples to the Gulf of Salerno.

From the center of Capri, Villa Jovis is about a 45-minute walk away. Along the way, we recommend stopping at:

  • Astarita Park , little known but with spectacular panoramic terraces.
  • Villa Lysis , an elegant neoclassical residence built by Count Fersen, features refined interiors, stucco, period furnishings, and a breathtaking panoramic position overlooking the bay of Marina Grande.

The Faraglioni
The Faraglioni are three imposing rocks that emerge from the sea on the south-western side of Capri:

  • Faraglione di Terra (or Saetta): the closest to the coast.
  • Faraglione di Mezzo (or Stella): known for the natural arch that crosses it.
  • Faraglione di Fuori (or Scopolo): habitat of the rare blue lizard.

The name "Faraglioni" derives from the Greek pharos (lighthouse): in the past, fires were lit on these rocks to guide boats.

Few people know that there is a fourth, lesser-known stack: the Scoglio del Monacone , so called because of the presence of the monk seal there until the early 1900s. It is the only one of the stacks that, according to tradition, was inhabited.

The Caves of Capri

Blue Grotto
The Blue Grotto is Capri's iconic attraction. 60 meters long and 25 meters wide, it has a very shallow entrance (less than one meter), accessible only by lying down in a small rowboat. Inside, the water takes on a brilliant blue hue thanks to a unique play of light. Entrance is only possible by sea, with a cash payment at the floating ticket office. In summer, the wait can be several hours. The grotto may be closed in case of rough seas.

Green Cave
Formerly known as the "Grotta dei Turchi," it is located on the southern side of the island. Inside, the water takes on a deep green hue. It can only be reached by sea. Nearby is the Grotta dei Santi, so called because of the shape of the rocks, which resemble figures kneeling in prayer.

White Cave and Wonderful Cave
During the boat tour of the island, you will also come across the White Grotto and the Marvelous Grotto, located near the Faraglione di Matermania.

  • The Marvelous Cave opens several meters above sea level and is accessible via a ladder. Inside are spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.
  • The White Grotto , located beneath the Meravigliosa, is decorated with white limestone formations. A famous stalagmite resembles the figure of the Madonna in prayer. This cave, too, can only be visited by sea.
